ABOUT THE SHOW

Billy Elliot is a heartfelt and inspiring story about a boy in County Durham in North East England during the miner’s strike in 1984-1985.  He discovers a passion for ballet despite the expectations of his community.  Billy Elliot celebrates self-expression, resilience and the courage to break away from tradition.  For the Illawarra, a region with its own rich coal mining history, Billy’s journey mirrors the struggles and hopes of our families, highlighting what happens when a community comes together to support something new.

Acclaimed by audiences and critics alike, it is the recipient of over 85 awards internationally. Featuring music by the legendary Elton John, book and lyrics by Lee Hall ​and the original choreography by Peter Darling,  Billy Elliot the Musical has been seen by over 12 million people worldwide and finally comes to Wollongong in a new production by Woods-Ray Theatricals in 2026!
